Wow, it’s been 4 years since I made the jump.
So I had a look back at the original content of this About page. Seems a long time back now. I am an architect that made the transition into video game design. I worked exclusively as an architect for 10 years – conceptually designing buildings, dealing with developer guidelines, preparing construction drawings, and meeting with clients. It was fun. It was interesting. It was a great experience.
There was always another aspect to my life, however. Whatever spare time I could muster after work, and after spending time with my beautiful wife and kids, I’d sneak some time to do map design for Team Fortress 2, write stories, sketching out worlds, and build 3D models of spaceships.
I just needed more of a creative outlet during a time when architecture wasn’t as creatively rewarding as it used to be (among other things). Designing buildings just isn’t enough. We can design whole cities. And more than just the physical aspect, we can design the way a city works, how a person interacts, and the narrative. Its one thing to create a limited space, but another to create a world, and I want a taste of that.
So I made the aforementioned jump. I resigned from my job as an architect and studied game development full time when a great opportunity presented itself. It was challenging yet familiar. I wasn’t surprised that a lot of architecture approaches and practices translated into game design and game development as a whole. “Design is design is design” some wise person once said. For the life of me, I cant remember who that was and the all powerful Google seems to come up blank as well. Well, there’s a reason the word design is paired with the words architecture, graphic, game, level, and narrative. They all use the same principles and structures in creating their final product.
Anyway, a year and a half intensive course at the Ubisoft Gaming Academy gave way to a job at new Ubisoft in Abu Dhabi. I couldn’t have been more excited. I was now working at the house that Altair and Ezio built. Its been over 2 years now, and we have a great game out called CSI: Hidden Crimes. Do go check it out! You’ll love it.
So the portfolio blog. Its just a visual documentation of things I’ve done in the past. There are little games we made at the academy as well as some of my favorite architecture designs. I do enjoy digital painting, 3D modelling, and world building through writing when I have the time so theres a bit of that in there as well. I’m in the process of revamping it since its been 4 years since I first created it so please bear with me if some pages aren’t working out right. Do let me know.
I’ve pressed life’s reset button and down the rabbit hole we go…
